PARIMA 2020 Digital Conference - Resilience Week
How do we keep running?

Resilience Week Hightlights

During the sessions, we saw the following recurring themes:

Agility

  • Agility is critical to make well-informed & balanced decisions at the right time.
  • Risk managers must stay ahead of risks, recover and rebuild. We must take the lead in building a healthy insurance industry ecosystem, get to the root of climate change and take advantage of opportunities brought by the current environment.
  • Risks are becoming more interconnected and interdependent. Captives have the flexibility to respond to new and unique risks, with the ability to grow and have access to capacity.

Digitalisation and its Challenges

  • The pandemic has accelerated digital transformation by two-fold, if not more. Cyber Risk is the next global grey rhino. Crisis preparedness is critical to mitigate the impact of an incident on your balance sheet, reputation and the trust of stakeholders.
  • It has been observed that an economy’s level of digitalisation is directly relevant to their capacity to absorb the economic shock, and therefore more resilience.

Engagement

  • COVID-19 has shifted the conversations in board rooms around the world, making them more risk aware. Risk managers must grab this opportunity to impress the value of embedding risk management in the business agenda.
  • Know the business’ hotspots, choose your industry partners wisely, talk to senior management, and broaden your expertise.

Strategic Risk Management

  • Leaders need to be the role model and set the norms, behaviour and culture for their organisation.
  • Big data and analytical abilities result in greater visibility of risks. It is up to Risk Managers how they can utilize these for decision-making as scenarios become more complex.
  • The maturity of an organisation’s risk culture and the ability to break silos internally remain as key components for the success of their Employee Care programme.

Thank you for joining the Risk Technical Workshops

What a productive start to the PARIMA Resilience week! Thank you for joining today’s Technical Workshops. Here are some of the key takeaways:

  1. Efficient information gathering is a key factor for risk managers for a better cost-and-benefit perspective. Big data and analytical abilities result in greater visibility of risks. It is up to Risk Managers how they can utilize these for decision-making as scenarios become more complex.
  2. With the market becoming more polarised, risk managers and the industry need to start collaborating and innovating risk sharing strategies. A few of these were discussed in today’s Japan Focus.
  3. Know the business’ hotspots, choose your industry partners wisely, talk to senior management, and broaden your expertise. Starting a captive is a marathon – you don’t need to start big and keep your eyes fixed on the long-term.
  4. Intimately know your organisations’ risk appetite and risk retention strategy, identify key stakeholders, identify what keeps your C-Suite awake at night and the business’ worst-case scenarios. The case studies we explored today highlighted how Captives have worked well in addressing these.

Tailor Made and Structured Solutions for Captive Owners in Asia

Another day full of practical insights for the PARIMA Resilience Week. Here are several points highlighted in today’s sessions:

  • Leaders must lead from the front; they set the vision and are responsible for stretching their organisation to reach its fullest potential. Leaders need to be the role model and set the norms, behaviour and culture for their organisation.
  • Risk managers must build their knowledge to understand business' & suppliers’ vulnerabilities and build resilience by investing in property risk improvement & enhancing their BCP.
  • APAC has proved itself pandemic-ready and corporations have responded well by bringing mental wellbeing at the forefront. Though there are tools and alternatives available to risk managers, the maturity of their risk culture and the organisation’s ability to break silos internally remain as key components for the success of their EB programme.
  • We saw 2 common points from the sessions: 1) Agility is critical to make well-informed & balanced decisions at the right time, and 2) Cyber Risk is the next global grey rhino; it is only a matter of when.

Conference Highlights

Time for the round up! Here are the highlights of today’s sessions:

  • Cyber risk is no longer just an IT issue; key decision-makers must be involved in the cyber conversation. Crisis preparedness is critical to mitigate the impact of an incident on your balance sheet, reputation and the trust of stakeholders.
  • Stress-testing incident response plans uncovers gaps that would otherwise be only found in the midst of a crisis. Think: 12 hours after the incident, in what stage of recovery are we at?
  • It has been observed that an economy’s level of digitalisation is directly relevant to their capacity to absorb the economic shock, and therefore more resilient.
  • Recovery is observed to pick up faster in Asia, with key factors being effective management of the spread of COVID-19, better exposure to China and favourable fiscal policy leeway to support the economy. Economies which seem to be lagging in recovery are India, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Innovation amidst a Hard Insurance Market with Aon

Such a great opportunity to hear from Greg Case & Owen Belman of Aon and Mario Greco of Zurich Insurance for the Opening of the PARIMA Digital Conference. Today, they have highlighted how:

  • COVID-19 has shifted the conversations in board rooms around the world and has triggered an awakening to become more vigilant against long-term risks
  • The pandemic has accelerated digital transformation by two-fold, if not more. This is a common theme expressed by the three CEOs
  • Businesses are faced with a brand-new set of challenges in 2020; however, that does not mean that we can afford to shove previously existing risks to the side
  • Companies should rethink how they can unlock the value of their intangible assets
  • Organisations are historically uncertain when it comes to ART; however, risk managers should start reconsidering non-traditional insurance programmes to keep on top of current and emerging risks
  • • Key tips for risk managers: Maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, remain flexible, ready & organised, and focus on mitigating risks instead of how to cover damages
