The AIR

Adapting to the Era of “Permacrisis”
From climate change, sustained inflation, debt crisis to geopolitical tension, the business risks are becoming increasing interconnected in ways that can amplify the impacts such as supply chain disruptions.

According to most recent Executive Opinion Survey conducted by World Economic Forum and Marsh, geo-economic confrontation and geo-political contestation of strategic resources inflation are the top risks cited by Japan business leaders, and there is no certainty on the duration of the impacts resulted from geopolitical risks.

How can companies understand the impacts of the geopolitical risks, formulate appropriate risk mitigation actions, and continue to achieve further growth? This session will share and discuss geopolitical risk preparedness from diverse perspectives.

People Risk: Survey Reveals Perception Gap between Japanese and Global Companies

Following the pandemic, there is a growing global focus on “People Risk” which is the risk associated with employees. In many other countries, business leaders recognised the impact people risk can have on business continuity, corporate reputation, and even corporate profits. In Japan, people risk is expected to receive more attention as the awareness of “human capital management” grows. Mercer Marsh Benefits (MMB) has conducted “People Risk Awareness Survey” for Human Resource and Risk Management professionals globally. This year, MMB conducted the inaugural “People Risk Awareness Survey” in Japan. In this session, we will share the key findings from the survey in Japan, and unveil the differences with the findings in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

The world is faced with a difficult decision around the world economy recovery post the Corona virus shutdown. This difficulty relates to managing emissions to meet COP 26 targets of saving the planet. It’s a fine balance between keeping the lights on and feeding the ever growing world population and allowing a full transition to renewables. The Russia / Ukraine war, along with increases in the cost of energy, challenged most (if not all) of COP26 targets and widened the gap between reducing of our addiction to oil / coal and transitioning to renewables. However, a balance could be achieved within this transition for a number of years until we can fully rely on renewables – Natural Gas!

04:30PMNavigating the Corporate Asset Class Shift

The AIR

Navigating the Corporate Asset Class Shift The global economy is increasingly driven by innovation and intangible assets. Over the past 25 years, intangibles have grown exponentially by around 11% per annum to $74 trillion in 2021 and it’s expected the value will reach $1 quadrillion by 2050.1 With this, intangible assets are progressively becoming the dominant share of enterprise’ value today and as such, it’s essential companies identify and understand the exposures this brings, explore ways to protect themselves against those exposures and furthermore, realize the full potential value of their intellectual property to utilize it for growth.

1 BRAND FINANCE GIFT™ 2021 – Annual Review of The Worlds Intangible Value

The AIR

An Everlasting Tradition: The Essence and Philosophy of Chado
“Chanoyu” (Japanese Tea Ceremony) is one of Japan’s representative traditional culture and comprehensive art. We refine and hone our minds through constant practice of formal tea ceremonies, considered as the pinnacle of hospitality, and view this opportunity to learn from the wisdom of predecessors and adapt these lessons to current situations. Beginning with Sen no Rikyu, who led the “wabicha” style to its peak, we will introduce in detail how the tradition of tea ceremonies has been preserved and handed down by successive generations of Iemoto of the Urasenke family.

* This session will be held in Japanese.

An economics and finance student by training, Kelvin entered the world of risk management and insurance more than 10 years ago. He has since been active on both the buy and sell side of the corporate insurance world, experiencing firsthand the relevance and yet under-appreciation of good corporate risk management. Kelvin started out as a risk consultant with a global insurance brokerage company, and advised private and public sector clients across a range of industries, with strong expertise in enterprise risk management, business continuity management, captives and risk-insurance gap analysis.

Kelvin is currently the corporate risk manager of International SOS, where he manages the global insurance portfolio which includes property, casualty and employee benefits and encompasses the company’s global operations in 94 countries. Kelvin also set up the first ever employee benefits captive program in Asia for Intl.SOS, and leads various risk management initiatives within the company.

In his desire to elevate the expertise and profile of risk managers, Kelvin became a founding board member at the Pan-Asia Risk Management & Insurance Association (PARIMA), a non-profit professional association dedicated to driving the development of this industry. He now serves as Treasurer and EXCO member. A frequent speaker and panelist at conferences, Kelvin leverages on his global network of risk manager peers and risk & insurance industry leaders to share best practices.
